In an earlier blog post we briefly talked about eco-friendly promotional gifts and how the world is quietly moving towards more sustainable solutions. The same direction has been taken with all kinds of packaging, which is increasingly made from biodegradable materials.

The fast-growing Estonian start-up Woola has taken packaging to the next level. They were looking for an eco-friendly alternative to the bubble wrap used in packaging, but there was no suitable solution on the market. So they found an alternative themselves in sheep's wool and now produce bubble wrap made from waste sheep's wool.

Wool is naturally a high-tech fibre that is elastic, moisture-absorbing, fire-resistant, temperature-insulating and compostable, which makes wool an ideal material for safely packaging delicate items. The prices of pressed wool packaging material are comparable to current solutions, so this solution should be a perfect fit for the market.

About 90% of all sheep's wool produced in Estonia goes to waste. That amounts to about 153 tonnes of waste a year, which is burned or buried. Woola's mission is to reduce the amount of plastic waste from e-commerce and thereby reduce its impact on the environment.

The biggest dream of Woola's founder Anna-Liisa Palatu is for them to produce a good, high-quality and sustainable product that will be used all over the world. A product that won't just be a niche product, but the new normal.

Woola is very ambitious. They don't want to be just a manufacturer based in Paldiski; they want to become a leading producer of sustainable packaging. They want Woola to become the new normal – for packaging not to be just an ugly piece of plastic, but to be beautiful, branded and made from sustainable materials.

If you'd like to know more about Woola and do your own bit for sustainability, visit their website, where you can also order wool envelopes and wool bubble wrap for yourself: https://www.et.woola.io/.
